New Pentax full frame DSLR camera teaser

Pentax published a new teaser for their upcoming Pentax full frame DSLR camera:

Crop mode with a choice of three settings

The new PENTAX 35mm full-frame digital SLR camera features a Crop mode, which allows you to select the image size to be recorded, with a choice of three settings: AUTO, FF and APS-C. The AUTO setting automatically selects the appropriate image size for the lens mounted on the camera. It selects either a 35mm full-frame image size for D FA- and FA-series lenses, or an APS-C image size for DA- and DA L-series lenses. The FF setting captures all images in a 35mm full-frame image size, regardless of the lens mounted on the camera.* The APS-C setting captures all images in an APS-C image size, regardless of the lens**, while displaying a cropping frame in the camera’s viewfinder.

* In the FF setting, an image outside the APS-C-format picture frame may not be reproduced in sufficient quality with certain lenses and/or in certain situations.
** When an image is cropped to an APS-C image size, the number of recorded pixels is lower, as the pixels in the cropped areas are eliminated.

Well Peter..Will it come with 36.3MP or 42.2MP or a all new 50 plus MP?

I had really big hopes for this camera so I could drop Nikon, but if it’s 36+ MP then I’m out. I get why, given all the DX lenses out there, but it’s a bummer for me. Gimme smaller file sizes and better high ISO/fps any day over more megapickles, when most files are viewed on devices nowadays anyway. 10MP can do great 16×24″, so I have no need for this. I was hoping for a Pentax FF for years. Oh well.

I just read this and though “finally, someone speaking my language” before reading it was me. I guess I really am all alone in this world.

Another teaser? Pentax is teasing their faitful customers with this project for years. I think some might have died already…

      It’s the anti-D500 Nikon.

  • I actually really enjoy the 1.2x crop mode that my Nikons offer, it’s a great way to “clean up” the periphery of my general 85mm or 70-200mm candid compositions, and get a slight bump in the reach. I find that I’m almost always cropping in a tiny bit with run-and-gun type candid shots, and the 1.2x crop mode reduces that step in post-production significantly, while only accidentally chopping off people’s foreheads or whatnot a small %% of the time, no greater than I accidentally do normally.

Either way, I’m excited. Now all I want to know is the megapixel count, and how close it will come to achieving the 645Z’s impressive overall quality.

My stockpile of K-mount manual focus lenses (currently only on an old K1000 from a grandfather) will soon rejoice!
