A dpreview forum member contacted Zeiss and asked them about any potential ZK lenses being developed in the future – the answer was that Zeiss has no plans to bring back the Pentax ZK mount despite the recent introduction of the K-1. Here is the full email:

Dear Xxxxx,

Thanks for your inquiry and your interest in our products.
Unfortunately, we had to discontinue our ZK type lenses in 2011 because the request was too low.
We do not plan to offer K-mount lenses again within the next future. If Pentax reaches a similar market share among the full frame bodies like Canon and Nikon, we will reconsider it.

For further details, please do not hesitate to contact us!

With best regards,

Hi can only wish the best to the K-1 because definitely Zeiss lenses are a joy to use. If I had to start from scratch – not from a longtime Nikon user, the K-1 is definitely the most interesting camera around and the recent reviews proved it.

is this news? It would be news when they did have plans. Breaking! The Samsung NX1 is still discontinued!

Thanks for this news update. This news is disappointing as I was hoping that Zeiss would reconsider its discontinuance of the K-mount now that Pentax has released the K-1. I would certainly like to have the Zeiss 15mm f/2.8 and the Zeiss 135mm f/2.0 for use with the Pentax K-1.

how about the Sigma ARTs, then?

I’m not going to be a Pentax user, but this still annoys me. As much money as Zeiss makes letting Sony put their logo on all their junk camcorders, forget about just ZK they could/should still be making *ZS* lenses for the five guys who want them.

Cosina can afford to their own lenses for *Leica Screw Mount* and you expect me to believe they can’t figure out a way to build ZK’s again for Zeiss without breaking the bank?

If Ricoh doesn’t want to share information to make chipped “ZK.2” lenses, then just make them “dumb” like the ZK lenses. Even if you lost the technical drawings from the original ZK bayonet part that’s still only like $400 of R&D and prototyping.

  • yeah right

Brilliant Sigma Art lenses for a third of the price with auto focusing. $2k more for an incremental upgrade is fine if you are a pro and can write it off against the tax paid from your next job.
