This GRLife app is an unofficial, browser-based tool designed to create Ricoh GR custom firmware
GRLife is an unofficial, browser-based tool designed for Ricoh GR III and GR IIIx camera owners. It allows users to create custom firmware and personalize their camera’s features without uploading any personal files or photos to a server. Here is a recap of its main purpose and features:
Custom Firmware Builder
You can selectively build a custom firmware file directly in your web browser. Then load this file onto an SD card to flash the camera, adding new functionality that isn’t natively available.
Film Simulations & Recipes
-
Film Library: Swap the default Image Controls with up to 32 different film looks (e.g., Portra 400, Vision3 250D, Gold 200). You get 5 slots to load any of these films from your SD card.
-
Community Recipes: Access 48 pre-configured community recipes, complete with custom names and icons in the camera menu.
-
Soft Glow & Grain (Experimental): Adds a highlight soft glow effect (replicating the look of Ricoh’s newer “HDF” models) and adjustable film grain to your JPEGs.
Added Camera Features
- New Aspect Ratios: Adds 4:3 and a cinematic 65:24 aspect ratio, complete with translucent framing masks on the live view screen.
- Date Stamp: Prints the shooting date—and optionally the name of the film simulation used—on the bottom right of your JPEGs.
- Rail Level: Replaces the standard level indicator with a new “rail” style level that turns green when the camera is perfectly straight.
Custom Shutdown Screens
The app lets you turn any photo into the image your camera displays when it powers off. Unlike custom firmware, this uses a simple SD card script and leaves the core firmware untouched.
Compatibility & Disclaimers:
- Supported Models: Ricoh GR III (firmware 2.10) and GR IIIx (firmware 1.60), including the Street, Diary, Urban, and HDF editions.
- Privacy: Everything runs locally in your browser. You never upload your official firmware BIN files or photos to their servers.
- Risk: The site heavily notes that this is completely independent of RICOH. Flashing unofficial custom firmware carries inherent risks, is done at your own risk, and could potentially void the camera’s warranty.
