Here are some frequently asked questions and answers for the Ricoh GR IV HDF camera:

Please tell me what to do first
  • Check the included items according to the included start guide.
  • Please read the usage precautions in accordance with the start guide, then set up the rechargeable battery DB-120 and a commercially available microSD memory card.

    *Don’t worry, even if you don’t have a microSD card, you can still record images using the camera’s built-in memory (capacity approximately 53GB).
  • Charge the lithium-ion battery DB-120 using the method described in the Start Guide.
  • Turn the power on and perform the initial settings when first starting up
  • If you insert a commercially available microSD memory card, be sure to format it in GR IV HDF before shooting.
  • Perform a shooting test (press the shutter button) to make sure the recording is normal.

What else do I need besides the included items when purchasing?
No. The GR IV HDF has approximately 53GB of internal memory. If you want to store more images, please purchase a microSD memory card with a capacity that matches the number of frames you will be taking.
What is the difference between the GR IV?
Instead of the ND filter found on the GR IV, the GR IV is equipped with a Highlight Diffusion Filter. *HDF is an abbreviation for Highlight Diffusion Filter. This filter produces special effects using RICOH’s printing technology, which has been cultivated over many years. By default, the Fn button on the back of the camera switches between normal shooting mode and HDF shooting mode. Additionally, a new electronic shutter is installed, allowing you to set high-speed shutter speeds up to 1/16000 seconds. Also, when the power is turned off, the screen changes to the HDF model screen.

Power supply/battery related

What type of battery can I use?
The only battery that can be used is the DB-120 rechargeable battery. The DB-110 for the GR III series, the DB-65 for the GR, GR II, and GR DIGITAL series, and other dry batteries cannot be used.

Memory card related

What type of memory card can be used?
The size and shape are those of a microSD card. microSD, microSDHC, and microSDXC memory cards can be used. The camera is compatible with the UHS-I standard for microSDHC and microSDXC memory cards. The maximum transfer speed of the UHS-I standard is 104MB/s.
■Operation has been confirmed with the following memory cards:

KIOXIA (Toshiba) and SanDisk : microSDHC memory cards: up to 32GB; microSDXC memory cards: up to 1TB

Is there anything I need to do first before using a microSD memory card?
When using a new memory card or a memory card that has been used in another device such as a computer, be sure to save the data on the card to a computer or other device, then format the card in the camera before use. * Please note that formatting will erase all data on the card.
Does it support UHS Speed ​​Class?
Yes, it is compatible with the UHS-I standard (microSDHC, microSDXC memory cards). The maximum transfer speed of the UHS-I standard is 104MB/s.

What does HDF mean?
 A: HDF stands for Highlight Diffusion Filter. This model is equipped with an HDF, a filter that produces special effects and is printed using the printing technology that RICOH has cultivated over many years.
What are the effects (features) of HDF?
The effect of this filter is to diffuse highlights, creating an image with a blurred appearance around the highlights. It emphasizes light but also creates a softer effect, allowing for the emotional expression of film or cinematic photography. Comparison Example 1 (Nighttime illumination)

Even areas that are not strongly illuminated are rendered softly.

When a point light source is blurred significantly, a faint pattern appears in the blurred area. What is this?
When taking close-up shots such as macro shots, in scenes where a point light source in the background is large and appears as a “bokeh ball,” the printed pattern of the HDF may be reflected within the bokeh ball.

There is no “ND filter” option in the exposure settings of the still image settings menu.
The GR IV’s ND filter mechanism is equipped with an HDF (Highlight Diffusion Filter), a filter printed using RICOH’s long-standing printing technology. Therefore, the menu item is labeled “HDF” instead of “ND Filter. ” “HDF” supports menu mode memory, so the “HDF” setting will be retained the next time the camera is turned on. When “HDF” is on, an icon appears on the LCD screen in shooting mode. Note: In strong lighting conditions or with very bright subjects, using the widest aperture may result in overexposure. In this case, we recommend increasing the aperture to an appropriate value and closing down the aperture.
Can I take photos with flash?
You can attach the optional external flash “GF-2” and take flash photos with automatic light control. When using the GF-2 flash for outdoor daylight photography, turning on the HDF can clearly produce the HDF effect depending on the shooting distance and conditions. *The GF-2 has a guide number of 3 (at ISO 100), so the effect may be weak when shooting at a certain distance.

Please tell me about the newly installed electronic shutter.
The camera uses an electronic shutter that allows you to select a faster shutter speed. You can set the shutter speed up to 1/16000 second while keeping the aperture at f/2.8. *At f/2.8, the maximum speed for a mechanical lens shutter is 1/2500 second. This expands the range of exposure value combinations, allowing you to achieve proper exposure even in bright environments with a large aperture, such as a midsummer beach, by using a fast electronic shutter. You can also use HDF in the same environments as mentioned above, expanding the range of shooting possibilities that can take advantage of the HDF effect.
What is the shutter speed at which the electronic shutter switches to the lens shutter?
When the aperture value is between f/2.8 and f/4.0, the leaf shutter setting range is 1/2500 seconds or slower, and the electronic shutter is used for shutter speeds between 1/3200 seconds and 1/16000 seconds. When the aperture value is between f/4.5 and f/5.0, the leaf shutter setting range is 1/3200 seconds or slower, and the electronic shutter is used for shutter speeds between 1/4000 seconds and 1/16000 seconds. When the aperture value is between f/5.6 and f/16, the leaf shutter setting range is 1/4000 seconds or slower, and the electronic shutter is used for shutter speeds between 1/5000 seconds and 1/16000 seconds.
What should I be careful about when using the electronic shutter?
When using the electronic shutter, subjects such as fast-moving trains, cars, and sports may appear tilted or distorted. *Cannot be used in conjunction with the flash (GF-2). *Shake Reduction and low-pass selector are turned off.
