New Components: The GR IV will feature a newly designed 18.3mm (28mm equivalent) f/2.8 lens with 7 elements in 5 groups, a new image sensor (24.24 megapixels), and a new image processing engine (likely GR ENGINE VI or later). These upgrades aim to enhance image quality while maintaining the series’ compact, portable design.
Improved Features:
Enhanced Image Stabilization: A 5-axis sensor-shift stabilization system, an improvement over the GR III’s 3-axis IBIS, offering better shake reduction.
Hybrid Autofocus: Combines phase and contrast detection for faster, more accurate focusing, ideal for street photography.
Internal Storage & Memory: Approximately 53GB of built-in memory, with support for microSD/microSDHC/microSDXC cards, a shift from previous models.
ISO Range: 100-204800 for improved low-light performance.
Weight: Approximately 262g, keeping it lightweight and pocketable.
HDF Model: A Highlight Diffusion Filter (HDF) version is also in development, designed to create a soft, vintage-like effect, with a release planned after winter 2025.
Design and Philosophy: The GR IV stays true to the series’ core focus on high image quality, quick response, and portability, refined over nearly three decades since the GR1 film camera (1996). It’s tailored for street photographers and enthusiasts, prioritizing snapshot functionality.
Availability: The camera is slated for release in Fall 2025. An exterior design sample will be showcased at GR SPACE in Tokyo, Beijing, and Shanghai starting May 31, 2025.
Additional Notes:
The Ricoh GR III will be discontinued in July 2025 due to parts procurement issues, but the GR IIIx will continue production for now.
No monochrome version was mentioned in the official announcement, despite earlier rumors.
Ricoh’s mobile app will be refreshed to complement the GR IV’s features.
