Canon patents AA filter image sensor shift simulator to minimize moiré, a technology used by Pentax for years

It seems that Canon filed a patent application for technology that is using image sensor shift to reduce the need for an AA filter:

“An interesting patent application [USPTO] uses fine movement of the sensor stabilisation system to perform one of the jobs of the anti alias filter for the AF system and address problems of sampling and spatial aliasing. A version for DPAF and contrast AF is discussed.” (via Northlight-images)

A similar technology called “AA filter simulator” has already been used by Pentax for a while:

“Innovative AA filter simulator to minimize moiré: By applying microscopic vibrations to the image sensor, the K-1’s AA (anti-aliasing) filter simulator provides the same level of moiré reduction as an optical AA filter.” (Pentax press release)
